Germain — Drôles d’oiseaux
A video for Germain l'Enchanteur, beat by Loko, shot in Paris on 12 January 2014 with LordFace. A dawn scout at La Défense that became the chorus location, the arches of the Pont de Bercy in the afternoon, and a rooftop in fog before the light went. Seven hundred and fifty euros, one camera, one light.
Three days before the shoot, the whole job goes out in a single email. Pixmakers brings a map of Paris, a scout, a rooftop and a gaffer zone; nine to five; a video head and a lens. Germain brings a car, two friends and his girlfriend, drinks, a change of clothes, a music player and a stool. Four hundred on signing, three hundred and fifty on delivery.
The day opens with a scout, in the dark. Eight sixteen on the esplanade at La Défense: the towers still lit, the walkways empty, a pink band coming up behind the Grande Arche. Twenty-nine minutes of photographs, and the location was taken — the choruses were shot there. Glass, concrete and nobody about, which is what the esplanade offers at that hour and at no other.
Two in the afternoon, under the stone arches of the Pont de Bercy, the metro viaduct overhead and the Seine at the far end. A camera on sticks, five people, and the artist in a blue hoodie performing straight down the lens. The arches do the framing for free — you point the camera along them and the composition is already made.
Ten past five, and the light is going. A flat roof somewhere above Paris, tower blocks dissolving in the haze, two figures standing at the parapet. At half past, a single bi-colour LED panel comes on against the blue of the dusk — the entire lighting package for the day, and the last frame anyone took.
